We had two other "inexpensive" dvd players that died recently and needed to replace them. This unit jumped out at me for three reasons, the ability to record to DVD, built-in TV tuner and the price. Setup was pretty simple and now the kids can watch their DVDs again. The recording quality of this unit is "ok". The unit has three different types of inputs: CABLE, RCA and S-Video, so it should work for most situtations. I gave the unit 4 stars, because it is not a high-priced or high-quality system and it met my low to medium quality device expectations.

The slim-profile, progressive scan Coby DVD-254 DVD player/recorder offers easy recording to both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs and is compatible with both NTSC and PAL video color systems. Offering 5.1-channel Dolby Digital surround sound audio output, the DVD-R1300 can play DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW discs and is also compatible with playing MP3 music files and displaying JPEG image slideshows. In addition to being able to record programming from your TV, you can also easily download footage from your video camcorder to disc using either the composite A/V or FireWire inputs on the front of the unit. DVD playback convenience options include multiple subtitles and viewing angles, picture zoom capability, an easy-to-navigate onscreen display, and parental locks. It offers the following connection options:
Composite audio/video: 1 out, 2 in (1 front)
S-Video: 1 out
Component video: 1 out
RF: 1 in
FireWire: 1 in
Digital audio: Coaxial output

Tech Talk Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
